A Weight Management App for LemonBox customers

Picking Up the Pieces

inspirations from users

At the outset of our project, we were in the middle of nowhere. Thus, we invited 8 people who have weight-loss experiences for 1 hour semi-structured interview to:

  • Investigate users’ previous process and strategies used in weight management
  • Understand existing tools and learn the reasons behind using a particular tool
  • Understand the role that those app play in users' overall health and wellness journey, and how it fits into their daily routines and habits.

Early Insights

Weight management starts with the important yet difficult food choices

What matters in food journal?

đź“šTo explore the problem space within the food journal setting and ground our initial set of research questions, we started by 10+ relevant papers to understand:

  • the cognitive effects of food journalfood journal in different context
  • pros & cons of current food journal
  • food journal in different context
  • the future of food journal

đź“– Efficient and Effective Reflection Matters!
‍
Food journal helps increase awareness and understand people’s eating habits
After people notice meaningful patterns, people can make changes to their diet and efficiently manage their weight.

Diary Method

Why diary method?

  • curious about how behaviors have changed in the process of journaling
  • look for a contexual understanding of the micro interactions that affect the “decision making”

How?

  • Task: log in everyday meals and their feelings about it
  • Recruit: 6 respondents who start to journal their food to lose weight

long-term data visualization

daily data

🤩Highlighted Results

  • Users have different journaling focuses in the former and latter stages of journaling cycle.
In the beginning stage, most people are using it to measure the calories they consumed per meal.
In the latter stage, some eating routines are formed and people have a clearer recognition of their consumption
  • The reliability of food data base would affect people’s willingness to continue journaling their meals.
  • Healthy eating habits in friends circle could positively influence people’s eating preference, and vice versa.

Deeper Insights

So, How might we remodel food journal as a secondary task make it effective and effortless?

Prototypes

Users can easily view the location, time, and meals with one click after scanning their photos.

This feature helps users remember what they ate on a particular day, aiding in diet management.

Users can discover, view, save, and organize their favorite foods and recipes.

This helps them quickly access their preferred options and plan meals in advance.

After uploading, users can review their mood while eating, receive immediate food analysis, and upload to an online database.

They can also view and interact with others who are sustaining healthy lifestyles.

My Takeaway

While considering scenarios and use cases, it was important to factor in user needs beyond the immediate user request to craft associated prompts that would help provide a stronger experience.
It was the first time doing a user testing. I realized the icon idea we put in the album was hard to understand for some users because they never see such design before. It would be a learning curve for them. Especially for older users who aren't familiar with technology, it's difficult to navigate. User testing allowed me to see the problems from users' perspectives.
